The Sierra Blanca Burro Bonanza brings the grit, history, and spirit of pack burro racing to the high country of southern New Mexico. Set beneath the towering slopes of Sierra Blanca Peak, runners and their burro partners take on a true mountain challenge in one of the state’s most iconic alpine landscapes. What was once a corridor for ranching, logging, and mountain travel now becomes the stage for this heritage-rich sport reborn. Racers will tackle a short course (approx. 3 mile) and long course 6-9 mile with stunning views of the mountain ranges that played a monumental role in New Mexico history.
Two legged and four legged athletes can expect courses that wind through forested terrain, steep climbs, and technical descents, all at elevation. The thin air, changing weather, and demanding trails test both human and burro, highlighting the teamwork, patience, and grit that define pack burro racing. Spectators will view a high-energy mountain atmosphere, with the charm and hospitality Ruidoso is known for.
The Sierra Blanca Burro Bonanza is part of the Strike It Rich Burro Race Series, connecting historic New Mexico communities through a shared legacy of burros, hard work, and adventure. Together with races in Silver City, Cerrillos, Magdalena, and beyond, the Bonanza celebrates the past while building a bold, community-driven future for outdoor recreation in New Mexico. Race
